| Customer Reviews: Excellent tripod except one thing May 18, 2010 F. Marsh We bought this tripod for a camcorder to record our church service from the sound room which is about 75 feet from the pulpit. Since we are using a 25x zoom, a good steady and smooth pan was needed. This tripod has a very smooth pan and does fine for our application except one thing. Our application requires the tripod to be placed on a counter 4 feet high and the the camera mount to be extended and additional 4 feet.
This tripod does not have an extending post that can be cranked up so the only option is to extend the legs. But if the legs are extended as far as we need to, one of the legs would be off the counter. There is no control to freeze the angle of the legs to have a stable leg position. The most stable position for the leg angle is to open the legs up until they hit a built-in stop. The old tripod had both a control to freeze the angle of the legs in an extension crank-up post. But the Davis & Sanford tripod has a very superior pan capability over the old Bausch and Lomb tripod.
This leg problem is something we are working around and would not be concerned with if the tripod was placed on the floor and not on a counter.
I'm pleased with this tripod January 30, 2010 Larry (Arkansas) Our company has several commercially produced videos out and I've presented on a couple of them. My work also occasionally has me presenting at schools or universities where we give presentations recorded by AV departments. Because I've been looking at purchasing a good tripod for our company, I've paid attention to the video tripods used in studios and at schools. I've also been looking a camera stores and at big box stores that have good photo departments. I haven't been all that impressed at what I've found in the less than $500 budget we had set. After reading reviews of this tripod I decided to take a chance and order one.
I like this tripod better than any of those I've seen or looked at. The smooth solid action is the fluid head is exactly what I'd hoped for. The tripod is very stable and I'm impressed with its quality. I can see where the location and design of the tilt/pan handles could be a problem with through-the-lens viewfinders. The handles are somewhat adjustable and I believe I could easily work around the issues if I actually used a TTL viewfinder rather than the camera's LCD screen. At the price, I think it's an incredible bargain.
Worth the Money December 15, 2009 Linda Bussard (Agra Ok) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just received this tripod yesterday from Amazon and for the money this is a very nice tripod. It was only 24 degrees when I brought the tripod into the house to unpack, so it almost made the fluid tilt impossible to move until it warmed up. After it warmed the head moved silky smooth both in pan and tilt. It has a nice size quick release plate that is adjustable on the head(slides back and forth)with a spring lock and screw lock. Also it does come with a second quick release plate which I wish it had told me in the product features because I ordered another one, now I have three plates. Comes with a soft nylon case which is good enough to keep out the dust. There is no rubber retractable spiked feet which is not a deal breaker. The 75mm bowl is sorta nice and I'm sure I'll get to liking it more and more as I use it, however it seems they put the bowl in place of a center column so there is no center column for height adjustment. The FM18 head is very beefy and would probably hold a much larger camera than my Panasonic HMC150 AVCHD video camera, but I like the solid feeling of it. All in all I feel it's a good buy for the money and I would of gave it five stars if it would of come with the spiked feet like it said it was suppose to. The main reason I bought it was for the fluid head which it has turned out to be truly fluid. One last thing, I really like the way the legs spread out so the tripod will set almost ground level. Oh Yeah ! The shipping packaging could of been a lot better, the outside box had almost been torn apart by the time I got it. All they used for packing material was thin brown paper which just can't handle the beating.
