Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars I have had one for years....   December 10, 2009

I have owned this tripod for at least 5 years and it is outstanding, especially for the money. Very sturdy and durable. I was taking pictures on the West Mesa of Albuquerque this fall and the wind was blowing about 20 mph. I was taking late evening shots of the mountain. I had shutter speeds of 30 seconds + in the wind and my shots came out sharp. I held my hand on the tripod during the gusts so it wouldn't blow over. I definitely recommend this. I am sure there are advantages to the composite graphite type tripods, but I really don't care to know because this tripod serves my purposes just fine.

4 out of 5 stars First Tripod, No Prior Experience To Go On   January 11, 2009

I've never owned any tripod except for one of those terrible super mini tripods. But then again, last time I bought a digital camera 4MP and 3X optical zoom was state of the art. I recently upgraded to something more serious (Canon SX10 IS) so I just wanted something simple to use once in a while but not have to make some sort of investment on.

First, I bought this tripod at a store, not here, but it was the same price. I checked a few of the big box electronic stores which carried a few different brands. In this price range, this particular tripod was the most solid and stable feeling. Some of the others had wiggle in the tripod legs when full extended.

Its very solid when neither the legs or the center is extended, and even so when the legs are fully extended. Once the center is extended, things can get a little bouncy. It seems as though the center mast portion is too springy. Even a few pictures I took with a 2 second delay came out a little blurry due to the camera wiggling back and forth (think tuning fork vibration). Might be partially my fault though, as I am very heavy handed and might be slapping that shutter button a bit too hard you know!

As for the quick release and the quick release connection to the tripod. This too was the best out of all the tripods I looked at in this price range. But its still almost completely plastic. Again, maybe being heavy handed and over tightening, but I could hear the sound of cracking when tightening things up in the panhead as I approached over tightening. The small latch that secures the quick release to the tripod is made of plastic, and you can see if flexing when it fully engages the quick release.

Over all though, I'm satisfied with this purchase and would do it again. I'm tempted to go back to the store and exchange for the next model up (the CX 570 for $49.99), but its not enough of an upgrade to justify the expense. I really think you'd have to spend atleast $20 more to get something of better quality.

5 out of 5 stars FOR THE LOW PRICE...   April 6, 2005

...this is an outstanding little tripod. We have two. I use it with a pretty large digital camera and it balances the camera just fine. My husband uses it with fine results for his shirt-pocket sized camera. The tripod is light enough to hoist over my shoulder for treks into the mountains, but heavy enough to be steady for finicky closeups.

The quick release is sometimes a little fussy about popping back on, but it is a quick _release_ (and it works very well at that), not a quick "snap on". The legs have been no trouble, at all. It helps that I trained myself to extend the lowest segment first, and then to move up as needed. One will need a mini-tripod because this does not go as low as you might want for some work on the ground. (True confession: I've had good luck jury-rigging the legs for shots on the ground when I haven't wanted the extra weight of a mini.)

Unless or until I decide to spend $$$$$ on fancy-schmancy equipment, this works just great for me. I've had it a while and, at the price, would have no qualms whatsoever at replacing it with the same model, if it should break -- which it shows absolutely no sign of doing.

2 out of 5 stars better than nothing   July 31, 2002

Quick release is a poor design. The plate is difficult to tighten, and even at that, slight camera movement loosens it off. The interface between plate and tripod is poor too, made of plastic, the tolerances to fit are sloppy and there is a little snap mechanism to hold the securing latch that loses tension over time, rendering it useless. As a tripod, it is very unsteady with center mast extended and lowest legs extended. If used with just the legs splayed and the camera bag looped over the legs for weight/ballast, it does a fine job, and in that respect, better than nothing. All locks work well with the exception of the plate latch/lock which is the most important one. This tripod is relegated to holding a flash for me.

Save your money and buy something more substantial.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for something so inexpensive..   July 23, 2002

Tripod serves it's purpose. For those of you who are just playing around with photography like I am, this tripod does the job. Built decently for what you pay for. The movement seems pretty smooth to me. The only thing I did not like were the legs. They're quite troublesome to extend and they sometimes got a little stuck. Other than that a great buy for the price.
